Question:
Why do the UAF always have to intervene on people's protests?

I was in uni having my lunch today, when this girl came round with flyers. There is going to be some kind of Scottish Defence League march happening in Edinburgh quite soon and they want to stop it.

I simply detest the UAF as they have demonstrated aggression etc when parties who they deem to be "racist" take to the streets to make a stance or whatnot. Why cant people just have their say? I certainly am not a BNP supporter or member, but irregardless of what others may think, and am certainly not defending them, they are a legal party. They have as much right to speak as Gordon Brown and the Labour party (who I am also not in favour of).

This is a weblink I found off YouTube; it makes the BNP look like saints, and the UAF do themselves no favours.

Seriously, why cant they just let groups like these have their say without butting in? I dont think I will be voting for anyone in the next elections, but politicians, regardless of what they believe in or think, should have a say (freedom of speech?).

I cant believe this girl was even allowed to hand out flyers in the uni for this. If it had been for anything else for the UAF, fine, but the fact they are protesting against a march for a party they despise is very stupid. Obviously, if the SDL become violent in this march, then fair enough, otherwise, why not let them be?

I have only a little issue with the uaf.

My issue with them is they have forced me to consider voting far right is a good thing.

The far left are a bunch of wasters, the uaf make me laugh since they have joined up with religious bigots.

The uaf are the best recruiting tool for the far right.

I know.

Thanks to the UAF 2009 was a great year for the BNP, EDL etc. The actions of the UAF really makes me question the reasoning behind their activities. I expect if you saw the accounts that 2009 was UAF's best year ever. I guess that's why you see the champagne socialist Ken Livingstone sitting as the chair.

"Unite Against Fascism is a new national campaign with the aim of alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right, in particular the British National Party (BNP), gaining an electoral foothold in this country."

Lets be fair here, the BNP gained 2 MEPs at the Euro-elections. However this was mainly due to the desertion of the Labour vote and not the increase in the BNP. So to suggest that a rise in the extreme right wing gave the BNP their seats is misleading. With all the added media attention(thanks largely to Labour and the UAF), and anger at the expenses scandal the BNP was given a free platform to reach the whole country. Even with all that, they only gained around 100,000 votes. That's rubbish.

The simple fact of the matter is that the BNP will not grow any more without promotion and that's where the UAF come in. The actions of the UAF is more likely to convert people to vote BNP than the actions of the BNP themselves. UAF think that they are the informed ones yet their attempt to stop the BNP and other similar groups are extremely naive and does not help the situation.

What did the girl do that was so wrong?

If both organisations have sought police advise then the Scottish Defence League (I assume this is similar to the English Defence League) have organised a perfectly legal march in Edinburgh and the UAF have organised an equally legal counter demonstration.

If you dont want her flyer politely say no thank you.

Walking through the city where I live on a Saturday I must get about 20 people trying to thrust flyers in my hand - everything from what is happening in which club that night, to political rallies, companies that want to buy my gold, offers with my coffee etc etc etc. I politely decline them all.

In reality UAF means unite against freedom. Its a muslim thing. they don't like democracy and think it should be abolished. Perhaps our young should confront these fascists who want to remove their rights...and ....well, lets say quieten them down a bit. Come on the young of Britain...there's some fantastic sport to be had here. If the police and the government support the UAF in their violence and intimidation....then surely they must support you doing the same.

The UAF will be the first to arrive in defense of Islamists. They worship Anjem Choudhury and the real fascists: Radical Muslims.

because they are a bunch of middle class students whose mum and daddys pay for everthing for them so they have to much time on there hands

notice how they never arrive to stop a radical muslim march

and never have a bad word to say about muslim hate clerics but as soon as the BNP start talking about immigrations all of a sudden thats inciting racial hatred im sorry but if asking people to kill jews and gays isnt fascism WHAT IS!!!

Hey, if you don't want to stand up against fascism that's up to you. Many people felt the same way in Germany prior to the nazi's gaining power. After the nazi's seized control I'm sure that many of those who stayed at home wished they'd taken on the nazi's and stopped them but it's too late for that now.

UAF, like many other anti fascist groups in many other country's, are endeavouring to ensure that it never happens again.

No-one is twisting your arm to do anything you don't want to do. We don't live in a fascist state yet...despite the best efforts of the SDL, BNP, EDL, C18, etc, etc.

You seem very selective with your link. Here are a couple that show why UAF stand against the fascists.

Somebody needs to stand up to the fascist scum!

FASCISM??? NEVER AGAIN !!!

Edit: Ade, I'm sorry if your dinner was interrupted but please forgive me if I think that standing up against fascism and bigotry is far more important.
